Book Review: The Last of The Mohicans

Book Review: The Last of The Mohicans

I saw the movie several months ago, and just adored it, despite my emotions getting the better of me during most of it. However, knowing how closely accurate movie directors are to following the books when making movies, I decided to buy a copy of the book for myself to appease myself on the matter. I read the book in about two weeks, reading off and on normally, but once I got into the really intense chapters I just couldn't put it down!

First of all, I must give my admiration to the writer, James Fenimore Cooper, on his superb writing skills! This man's got talent, let me tell ya. I just adored his style of writing, the way he described in depth the atmosphere that his characters journeyed through, was just fantastic! Being a amateur writer myself, I relished whenever he would describe a forest scene in detail. The way in which he wrote, seemed to flow together in a beautiful written chorus that filled the pages.

For me, the book took a couple chapters to get going good, but once it did, it kept you saddled in the pages for the remainder of the story. Now, just a warning, like I mentioned above the author likes details, and sometimes he even gives us some most gruesome and bloody details into battles, raids, and so forth. So be ye warned! I admit, that I got to where I wouldn't read the book at nighttime, because of such gory details that he sometimes describes for his readers.

This book is rooted in the middle of the French and Indian war, and though you get a glimpse of the white encampments, most of the story is told in the deep forests, following Hawkeye and his companions along the most treacherous of forest paths, and of  all the adventures and sometimes very-dangerous situations they find themselves in. From a very young age I've been fascinated by the indians, their culture and way of life. In the book you see two tribes of indians, and though they both have dark skin, their characters are far different from each other. One being the war loving, blood thirsting Hurons, and the other, the more mellow Delawares.
Several indians in particular in the book I found most intriguing. The hunting and tracking skills that they possessed is just mind-boggling! Not to mention their bold, fearless courage, and the desire to do what is right...unlike some other indians who are in the book, and by the end you (the reader) are wanting to choke through the book. Trust me on this, I know!

The villian who is portrayed both in the movie and book, in one word, is in fact a villian, in the truest of shape and form! And does an excellent job of making the reader..and watcher..hate him with a passion. Oh! He is so evil!

 Foreshadowing of the ending:

Before you even begin to read the last few chapters, I highly advise the reader to put a full box of tissues near at hand! You will need every. single. one of them! I just couldn't believe the ending, it crushed me. After reading the ending, I was like.."Oh well. I guess I didn't need my heart or feels anyway!"
Seriously though, I was bawling at the end! But, besides all of that, the book is an excellent read and I highly suggest it! But, as I stated above, the book is NOTHING like the movie, and the movie is NOTHING like the book, so enjoy them both separately for what they are.

Clearing Your Thoughts ~ Walking

Clearing Your Thoughts ~ Walking

Sometimes I just feel like locking myself in my room and writing for days on end. Unfortunately, I don't think my hands or wrists would last that long *ahem* Aye, writing can do that to ya! It's exhausting work, I tell you. Not only does it use your mind, but all of your creativity and ideas get a good work-out too! After writing several pages your mind starts to feel exhausted and worn out. I sometimes have to take a walk to clear my thoughts and get my brain working correctly again.

Usually by the time I come back indoors my mind has filled up with more ideas that it drew from the nature-walk. So there, having some writer's block or writer's exhaustion? Take a walk...

Scribblings of My Pen

Scribblings of My Pen

I'm sometimes amazed at what falls out of my pen. The most random and peculiar tidbits find themselves scribbled on a patch of paper. My mind is most defiantly a mysterious thing, but I would be completely lost without it, I'm afraid. The most imaginative thoughts spring forth from within it's depths. For example, this interesting piece of work came from from the wild blue yonder! There you have it, I present you a odd article of writing, fresh from my brain.

A Writer's Life For Me!

 A Writer's Life For Me!
 The Oddities of Writers

Don't be surprised of shocked when I come out of the bathroom carrying a notepad and pen. This is perfectly normal behavior (at least for me). Believe it or not my creativity sky rockets in the bathroom, and as soon as I leave it disappears so I just started carrying pens and paper with me...everywhere.

Knowing other people with the writer's mindset (trust me, there are ALOT of us out there!) I'm sure at some point or another you'll bump into one of us, so I thought I would point out several character traits that we all seem to posses.

  • If you see someone staring off into space don't be alarmed, there's a good chance that person is a writer. They are probably thinking up a delicious plot or ending for a story...and for your own safety (and the safety of the characters) I highly recommend NOT disturbing them, the consequences could be fatal both to you and the characters trapped in the book! ;)

  •  Every writer at some point has wanted this:

  • Never interrupt us while we are reading....

...we will turn into Loki and go on a rampage..and no we aren't adopted!

  • We're extreme book hoarders. Our nightstands (as well as any other available surface) are stacked high with a mountain of books that we are either reading or are on our "To Read" list.

  • We are extremely protective over our books....beware! You've been warned!

  • We are book nerds. Deal with it! We constantly have our nose stuck in a book and if we can't find a book worth reading, no biggie, we'll just start writing one!

  • When reading Shakespeare or any other book of literature inspiration, we (I do at least) have a pen and paper at our side at all times. You never know when a new and exciting story inspiration will hit us upside the head. *BANG...WHAP*

  • Midnight Mind Boggling - We just laid down from an exhausting day of *insert form of work* and all we want to do is get some peaceful rest...our minds are rebellious and have other ideas, contrary to our own! Instead of shutting off and resting, oh no, our minds go crazy wild and start sputtering out the most awesomest ideas ever and we just have to write them all down. In consequence thereof, instead of going to be at a descent hour like normal people, we stay awake till 2:00 a.m. scribbling in our not-so-empty notebook, because our minds explode at nighttime and refuse to let us sleep. Conclusion: Always have a scrap of paper and a pen handy, you never know when you'll need it!
  • We stretch our arms, hands and fingers a lot. After writing hours at a time our arms get extremely sore and sometimes cramp. Our fingers are very exercised and in shape, as a result.

  •  Just keep writing! When my creativity is flowing, it doesn't just flow..it sounds like a rushing ocean wave crashing in my mind....*woosh* When these moods pounce upon me, I usually find myself locked in my room writing for hours.

  • As writers we sometimes forget to eat. We get so absorbed in our mind-world that we forget about the things going on around us, because we are otherwise occupied playing the story or scene we just wrote through our minds. Just today I found myself back in my room writing for what seemed like hours (it was probably days...just kidding!), suddenly my stomach growls and I'm like "Oh, sorry! I guess I forgot to feed myself today! Oopsy! To help remedy this, have a snack stash in your bedroom! ;)
  •  There is nothing more frustrating than finding yourself in an inspirational mood and having no writing materiel's handy! Then when such materiel's are handy your creativity level is 0%, and you've forgotten all the lovely ideas you did have rushing through your mind. Trust me, I've been there, it's not fun!

  • We own a ridiculous amount of notepads and pens. Our rooms are usually cluttered with them.
  •  We enjoy looking at, reading and studying other people's form and style of writing. For me I find that my favorite authors are very descriptive and informed in their way of expressing themselves. I tend towards this style of writing.

Ah! The joys of being a writer. To the rest of the world I'm sure we look completely insane and people are tempted to call the cops on us and have us placed in a facility for the mentally unstable, but no matter! We are perfect as we are!

The Battle Has Begun.

The Battle Has Begun.

Sir Gervaise was about to charge into the conflict of battle. The only noise he could hear was the breathing of his horse and the galloping of his hooves.

His heart beat quickly, his vision dimmed, he only had one image in his mind: his enemy.

He could see his knights charging forward on their gallant steeds, he could see them lunging their horses into the wall of spears and pikes.

As he neared the line himself, his senses became keener and more distinct. His horse leaped over the barrier of shields, pikes, and spears.

He was in the midst of the bloody conflict.

The battle had begun.
